Getting ready for a family photo session can feel like a lot, especially if you’re coordinating kids, schedules, and outfits. But it doesn’t have to be stressful! In fact, with just a little prep, it can be a fun experience that results in gorgeous, joy-filled photos you’ll treasure forever. These family photo session tips will help you prepare with confidence from start to finish.
Here’s everything you need to know to feel confident and ready for your next family photo session!
I always recommend shooting during golden hour—about 1–2 hours before sunset—when the light is soft, dreamy, and flattering. It’s the perfect time to get that warm, natural glow in your images.
If you’re planning your session during a busier season (like fall), be sure to schedule in advance. Weekends book up fast, but weekdays often have more flexibility.
And don’t forget: the sun sets earlier in the winter and later in the summer, so keep that in mind if you’re working around nap times or evening routines!

Whether it’s a park, a farm, or somewhere meaningful to your family, the right location makes a big difference. I shoot outdoors in natural light because it gives your photos a bright, timeless look.
Have a special place in mind? Let me know! I’m always happy to explore new spots. And if you’re not sure where to go, I have plenty of suggestions around Houston and beyond. Check out my portfolio for ideas!
This is one of the biggest questions I get, and I have loads of tips in my family session style guide—but here are the highlights:
Still not sure? I’m always happy to review outfit ideas or help guide you based on your session location.
If your kids are old enough, talk to them about the session in advance. Let them know it’ll be fun and important to you. And if they’re little—snacks, water, and comfort items go a long way!
Bring small toys or treats to help keep their attention, and plan a reward afterward (ice cream is a client favorite!). If your little one isn’t having the best day, don’t worry. I’ve worked with all kinds of moods and moments—I promise we’ll get great shots.
The perfect photo doesn’t come from perfect hair or outfits—it comes from connection, movement, and joy. So let go of perfection, lean into the moment, and let me handle the rest.
If you’ve been thinking about booking family photos, now is the perfect time. Whether it’s your first session or your fifth, I’ll walk you through everything so you feel prepared, relaxed, and excited.
